The Tamaki Estuary is a major waterway within the Auckland Isthmus. The Estuary is the site of numerous recreational activities, walking, sailing, fishing and a busy ferry service. It also has lovely beaches, a complex and beautiful coast line and open areas which provide roosting, feeding and nesting places for numerous shore birds.
The Tamaki Estuary Protection Society (TEPS) is a not for profit organisation which was founded in 1969. It was initially formed as a result of community concerns over a proposal to turn the Tohuna Torea area into a landfill site, and to develop adjacent parts of the estuary as a residential marina complex.
